Abstract

The article contends that body provides under the matized resources for caring which health professionals can utilize in creating richer, more satisfying and ultimately more effective patient relations. The paper develops a notion of embodies care drawing on contemporary works of feminist care ethics, philosophies of embodiment and nursing philosophy. It further argues that ethic can be seen to be founded not necessarily on religions as or its tenets as stressed by some scholars, but on the social nature of the African man and woman. Within this framework, the body is viewed not only as a repository of tacit knowledge regarding how to convey care, but also as a resource for imaginative empathy that can improve patient relations. The article seeks greater reflective ate notion to the training of Michael practitioner on the nature of ethical inquiry in their robust interaction with patients. The implication for health education and wealth promotion was highlighted and some possible recommendations made.

Abstract

This proposal aims to analyze the possession, access and distribution of assets on the part of the poor households in Uganda. Assets are categorized into four broad types: human, physical, financial and public/organizational assets. Poverty on the other hand is defined as low per capita expenditure. It is hypothesized that assets either in single form or in combination can generate multiple benefits in terms of improved household welfare. Data is obtained from household surveys conducted in Uganda since 1992/93 to 1999/2000. Both descriptive analysis and a welfare regression framework will be used to determine the effects of asset possession on household welfare. It is expected that access to or possession of assets improve household welfare and that changes in assets tenure may explain transitions towards and outside poverty.

Abstract

This proposal aims at investigating the sources of income and their effects on overall inequality and poverty in rural areas of Uganda. The data will come from three major surveys conducted in Uganda, the 1992/93 Integrated Household Survey, the 1999/2000 and 2002/03 National Household Surveys. The data from the National Household surveys is comprehensive and covers household social and economic characteristics such as expenditure, income, assets, education and entrepreneurship. The analysis will aim at decomposing the sources of income into five major groups and determine the contribution of these sources to inequality. Further, the study proposes to use the results of the decomposition analysis to explain how important the different types of income sources are to poverty. The study also aims to do a panel analysis of the changes in sources of income and inequality. It is expected that rural incomes are not only associated with agriculture, but with other sources such as nonfarm income and remittances. Finally, the findings of this study will help policymakers in Uganda to identify and take specific measures to improve income distribution and the income earning potentials of the different groups of
people or location.

Abstract

This paper is entitled “Documentary Film as a Veritable Tool for Cultural Rejuvenation: Femi Odugbemi’s Oriki as a Paradigm”. The study is motivated by the discovery that the art of naming and interest in meanings in names has generally eroded the African, especially the Nigerian. A situation where people openly say that they don’t have a traditional name is appalling. It is motivated by the interest and commitment of the documentarian that took special time to investigate the essence of naming among the Yoruba ethnic group using it as a reference for other cultures of Nigeria to see and make conscious effort towards reviving theirs. It reveals the extent to which the people are misinterpreting culture to mean anything fetish, the ways people stay away from their kith and kin for some very unfounded stories attached to names. This paper also exposes the benefits in names and the need to encourage the people’s culture through the use of indigenous names.

Abstract

Burkina Faso has the lowest education rates in Africa. According to official statistics, only 23.9% of the population is literate in 2000. School education rates for primary and secondary education are low compared to the average in Africa. They were respectively 38.4% in 1997 and 10.67%, that is, a combined rate of 24% compared to an average of 56.2% for Sub-Saharan Africa during the same period. The authorities of the country are aware of this obstacle due to the low rate of school education. As a result, concerning educational supply, the country set up to increase the rate of school education to 70% by 2010. To achieve an efficient capacity development of educational supply, this should be done along with the demand for education. This study focuses on this situation and aims at identifying the determinants of the demand for primary and secondary school education in the country.

Abstract

The practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) continues to thrive in most communities in Africa, especially in Nigeria in spite of the efforts of government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and other health bodies at eliminating all forms of cultural violence against women. It is ironical that women are majorly the operators of this act of
circumcision on their fellow women. They are thus best described as women who are ‘axemen’ of womanism. This chapter examines FGM and the patriarchal socio-cultural order which is underpinned by phony but traditionally accepted reasons in many parts of Africa, including Nigeria. To this, it adopts the content analysis method to investigate the
issue of female circumcision (FC) in A Scar for Life by Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma (BFA). BFA, in treating this gender issue is particularly concerned with the plight of women. The ending of his play suggests that he is totally in alliance with the women but he is of the strong view that women would succeed when they enlisted the support of men. It is only in their doing this that women would be liberated from this and other atavistic practices which denigrate them. Consequently, the chapter posits that FGM is a patriarchal attempt to suppress women and to sustain this submissiveness in the name of culture. Therefore, its practice should be discouraged by all, both men and women and efforts should be geared towards abolishing it.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine facilities and equipment on intercollegiate sports participation among universities games in the south–south states, of Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated in line with the objective of the study. The sample size of the study comprised three hundred and two (302) students-athletes, comprising both male and female from the selected universities. The main research instrument used was a self structured and validated questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.79. The reliability of the instrument was established through test-retest method, mean was used to analyse data concerning research questions, while inferential statistics of simple linear regression was employed to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The study revealed among other things that there is a significant relationship between facilities and equipment and intercollegiate sports participation. The results also showed that R-value for availability of sports facilities is .748 and sports equipment .662 both of which have a high a positive high relationship between availability of sports and level of sports participation. From the findings it was concluded that students’ participation in intercollegiate sports was influenced by the independent variables. Based on the findings, it was recommended that adequate and stimulating sports facilities should be provided to stimulate students’ interest in sports participation. There should be proper maintenance culture of the facilities. And a capable and qualified coaches should be employed for quality delivery.

Abstract

This paper examines the ICT as a constitutive influence on netizen-artists approach to creating art through analog and digital methods. The study analyses the work of four artists who are influenced by analog and digital processes as a way of gaining deeper insights of the emerging phenomena. The study justifies the ICT influences on art making as instinctual traits in the human who reacts from conceptual and material experiences of an era. The paper concludes that though humans react through any existing technology of their time, the importance of doing things through the hand as is applicable from the beginning of time still maintains its attractions to artists because of deep haptic connection that exists by touch and thought processes. The paper recommends that artists should incorporate the advantages that are inherent in both approaches in the creation of their art.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine gender and parental influence as correlates of intercollegiate sports participation among universities in the Geo-political zones, of Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated in line with the objective of the study. The population of this study comprised three hundred and thirty (330) athletes and sports administrators from the selected universities. The sample size of the study comprised three hundred and two (302) students-athletes, comprising both male and female were purposively selected for the study. The main research instrument used was a self structured and validated questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.79. The reliability of the instrument was established through test-retest method. Mean was used to analyse data concerning research questions, while inferential statistics of simple linear regression was employed to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The study revealed among other things that there is a significant relationship between gender and parental and intercollegiate sports participation. The results also showed the relative effects of the independent variables with gender having the grand mean of (3.28), and parental influence having (3.28) respectively. It has also revealed that the independent variable could predict the dependent variable. From the findings it was concluded that students’ participation in intercollegiate sports was influenced by the independent variables. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the cultural taboos and erroneous ideas about female sports should be laid aside to enable females participate actively in sports. In order to strike a balance in gender participation in sports, females should be given leadership positions in sports, access to resources and structures. They should be provided with incentives and totally empowered among others.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if the cognitive, psychological and behavioural has significant affect of stress among academic staffs of University of Port Harcourt and determine ways of managing stress among academic staffs. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested using the chi-square statistic at 0.05 alpha level. The sample size 300 academic staff randomly selected from six faculties of the University. The instrument was developed based on the effects of stress as presented by Oyerinde (2004) and validated by a group of experts (r=0.76). The study found that there were significant differences among staff on cognitive, psychological and behavioural effects of stress; and that relaxation sleep and exercises were the most common ways of managing stress among staff, while sleep and recreational games were the two most important ways of managing stress among female academic staff. The study recommended that the University should enforce the University Time Table for Sports among members of staff, for recreational programmes in managing stress.

Abstract

Electronic Health (E-Health) is the application of Internet and other related technologies in the healthcare industry to improve the access, efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of clinical and business processes utilized by healthcare organizations, practitioners, patients, and consumers in an effort to improve the health status of patients. Widespread adoption of Electronic Health (E-Health) is a key strategy to meeting the challenges facing health system such as increasing demands, rising costs, limited, resources and workforce shortages. Despite the rapid increases in Electronic Health, acceptance and utilization have been very poor and the benefits fewer than expected. In order words, health workers have not been able to maximize the benefits associated with Electronic Health which would have boost their efficiency and effectiveness in medical practices. The study investigated factors influencing utilization of electronic health among health workers of University College Hospital, Ibadan. The study adopted descriptive survey research design; Multistage sampling technique was used to select one hundred and eighty respondents which constituted the sample for the study. Self-developed questionnaire was use as instrument for data collection and it was subjected to a reliability test analyzed with Crombach Alpha Correlation and Coefficient of 0.72 was obtained. Six null hypotheses were formulated in line with the variables of the study and tested with a chi square statistics at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of the study shows that all the hypotheses were rejected which indicate that factors such as: Shortage of Resources, Inadequate Manpower, Inadequate power supply, Poor Internet Network, Lack of Electronic Health Policy, and Poor Mastery of Electronic Health affect the adoption and utilization of electronic health among Health workers of University College Hospital, Ibadan. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made: Government and non-governmental organization should create awareness on the importance of electronic health at national, state, and local level,. Hospital Management board should provide alternative source of power supply with the purpose of consolidating the existing epileptic power supply, There is need for E-Health facilities upgrading that will be flexible to be used by the health professional and Laptop should be provided at a subsidized rate to core-health workers.

Abstract

Nigeria economic recession has been a global headlines for some years now and it started showing up the red signals as the government devalued the currency in order to meet up with challenges ahead of the country. However, in order to stabilize the Nigeria currency and move higher in the front lines of growth and development, it (government) organized reforms that will improve human capital, promote high-quality public infrastructure and encourage competition among investors. Therefore, this paper attempts to discuss the nature and structure of the Nigeria economy, concept of economic recession, causes, consequences, helds for accounting education in an era of economic recession, factors hindering economic growth in an era of economic crisis and how to manage the situation using accounting education. Recommendations were offered on how to climb out of the
hole economically.

Abstract

The study investigated sex and location differences in the study habit of secondary school students in Delta Central senatorial District of Delta State, Nigeria. Two research questions were raised with their corresponding hypotheses formulated and subjected to testing at 0.05 level of significance. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. One hundred and fifty (150) SS1 students were used as sample size for the study and were randomly selected from six public secondary schools, three schools from urban area while three schools from rural areas using multi-stage sampling technique. The Study Habits Questionnaire (SHQ) constructed by the researchers was used for data collection and was face and content validated by experts with an internal consistency co-efficient of 0.70 using Cronbach alpha. Mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics of independent sample were used to analyse the data. The t.-test result revealed that there is no significance difference between male and female students in their study habit and there is no significant difference between urban and rural students in their study habits. It was therefore recommended that Counsellors should assist students in developing good study habit necessary for academic success, Parents should be interested in assisting their wards by providing adequate educational facilities for their children in order for them to improve in their educational and personal-social attainment and the society should be enlightened on the importance of education so as to encourage their children to inculcate effective study habits.

In this work, we wish to expose the reasons why there are crisis in the family and proffer solutions. Our method is textual analysis, it means a critical look at the works written on authority and the family in order to resolve crisis of authority in the family.

Abstract

This study investigated emotional intelligence and self-efficacy as correlates of job satisfaction among secondary school teachers in Ughelli-North local Government Area of Delta State. A sample size of 400 respondents were used. The study used simple random sampling to select the schools and stratified proportional sampling to draw the sample. Three research questions and three null hypotheses were used. The design for the study was correlational research design. The instruments used were Emotional Intelligence Scale (EMIS), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS) for data collection. The reliability of the instrument (EMIS, GSES and JSS) were also determined using Cronbach Alpha Method of internal consistency and the coefficients obtained were 0.814 for Emotional Intelligence Scale, 0.793 for Self-Efficacy, 0.779 for Job Satisfaction Scale. Linear and Multiple regressions were used to answer the research questions, while t-test and one way ANOVA associated with regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Emotional Intelligence combined together significantly relate to Job Satisfaction among secondary school Teachers in Ughelli-North Local Government Area of Delta State. Some of the recommendations of the study are: Teachers should learn to communicate effectively, work with others as a team and learn to resolve conflicts. School Administrators should give Teachers awards, recognize and also honor teachers for a job well done. Teachers should also be prompted as at when due. The implications of the results and suggestions for further studies were made.

Abstract

This study investigated Parents and Peer Group Influence on the Career Choice of Secondary School Adolescents in Benin Metropolis. The Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study in which two questions were raised and their corresponding hypotheses formulated. Population comprised of Senior Secondary Class-two (SS2) students in Oredo, Egor and lkpoba-Okha Local Government Areas in Benin metropolis of Edo State. The instrument titled the Career Decision Scale Questionnaire (CDSQ) adopted from Salami, (2013) was used for data collection. Data were analysed using t-test. The population included all forty-seven (47) public senior secondary classes two students in Benin Metropolis with a sample size of two hundred and seventy (270) secondary schools adolescents randomly selected from nine schools within Benin Metropolis. The result showed that parents significantly influence the career choice of adolescents, especially with regards to the choice of occupation; Also, peer-group did not significantly influence the career choice of adolescents. It was however, recommended that parents should be guided and counselled as the likelihood that some parents might influence their children’s career choice and affect the attainment of appropriate career gains. Also, Counselling psychologists and Counsellors in public schools should from time to time organize seminars / workshops to raise more awareness on the importance of assisting adolescents in making adequate career choices without pressure from parents and other individuals.

Abstract

Performing regular physical activities offers so many benefits to children and adults alike. This paper examines the contributions of physical fitness towards performance ability of children and adolescents. Also, the Physical Fitness status of children and adolescents performance was discussed in relation to the activities requiring the movement of the whole body or its part due to muscular contraction. Also highlighted, are types of Physical activities employed to improve physical fitness, which are ranging from its numerous contributions towards optimum health and fitness to its dominant roles in improving athletic performance. Factors influencing physical fitness like heredity, lifestyle, maturation and environment were also highlighted. In conclusion it was discussed that healthy person will live longer and more productive at work and in school, and generally contribute more to the country’s growth and development in terms of fitness. Recommendation made was that schools and adults should provide time for both structured and unstructured physical activity during school and outside school; provide children and adolescents with positive feedback and good role models. In addition, parents and teachers should model and encourage an active lifestyle for children to learn skills required for physical activity and maintain safety precautions.

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate deviant behaviour tendencies and counsellor-student relationship among young adolescents. A random sample of young adolescents (N=200) were drawn from Junior Secondary School Basic Nine (JSS II) from four public coeducational schools in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria. A study instrument consisting of 25 items was validated and employed to check for the influence of guidance and counselling on four selected students’ behavioural output. Two research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study and tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 level of significance. Results showed that there exists a significant relationship between alcohol use and perceived deviant behaviour tendencies among the Junior Secondary School students while there was also a significant influence of counselor-student relationship on the reduction of deviant behaviour tendencies. These findings confirmed the importance of guidance and counselling in schools as a means to curbing students’ deviant behaviour among adolescents.

Abstract

The study investigated the effects of eight weeks Hand Ergometry Training Programme on Cardiovascular Variables and Grip Strength of Neurological Patients in the Experimental and Control Groups. The participants were sixteen neurological patients attending physical rehabilitation in Ageless Physiotherapy Clinic, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. Age ranged from 50-74 years. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting the participants. Informed consent form was given to the participants. The participants in the experimental group were subjected to ergometry training exercises lasting twenty minutes, performed three times a week, while those in the control group did not undergo any training programme. Data were collected on the cardiovascular and hand grip tests on experimental and control groups. The data collected was analyzed with descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation and inferential statistics of Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). There were significant differences in the systolic blood pressure (F1, 13 = 23.878, P < 0.05), left hand grip strength (F1, 13 = 86.846, P < 0.05), right hand grip strength (F1, 13 = 40.797, P < 0.05) and no significant difference in diastolic blood pressure (F1, 13 = 4.053, P > 0.05) of the experimental and control groups. To ascertain where the significant differences occur, estimated marginal mean was used. It was found that significant differences existed between experimental and control groups. It is concluded that ergometry training programme has effect on the cardiovascular variables and hand grip strength of neurological patients. It is recommended that neurological patients should participate in hand ergometry upper limb exercises, two to three times a week.

Abstract

The study investigated the input and process variables as predictors of adolescents’ academic performance within Education District II of Lagos, Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study.,The population for the study were Senior Secondary School (II) Students and their teachers, disproportionate stratified sampling (to select 252 students across three zones within the Education District II), the construction of three research instruments (teachers’ and students’ questionnaires, with a Mathematics Achievement Test). The Students questionnaire includes: Use of Learning Strategies (ULS) subscale which was modified from Learning Strategies Questionnaire which was designed by the Centre for the Study of Learning Performance (CSLP) located in Canada, Students’ Self Efficacy (SS) which was modified from the Academic Efficacy Subscale designed by Midgley et al (2000) respectively .The second instruments is the teachers questionnaire which includes the Teachers’ Metacognitive Skills in teaching Mathematics modified from a standard scale designed by Balcikanli (2011) which was initially titled as Metacognitive Awareness Inventory for Teachers (MAIT), Teachers’ Attitude towards Teaching modified from the Teaching Professional Attitude Scale originally designed by Akbulut & Karakus (2011); however, two questionnaires (Nature of School Environment,(NSE), and Availability of Teaching Aids for Mathematics) and a Mathematics Achievement Test(MAT) were respectively designed by the researcher. The face and content validity of the research instruments were ensured using the Cronbach’s reliability coefficient were as follows: 0.559 (Use of Learning Strategies), 0.504 (Students’ Self-Efficacy), and 0.583 (Nature of School Environment), 0.733 (Teachers’ Metacognitive Skills), 0.553 (Teachers’ Professional Attitude Skills), and 0.536 (Teaching Aids for Mathematics) and Split-Half reliability Coefficient for Mathematics Achievement Test is 0.584.l Analyses was conducted on the responses through the use of descriptive (frequencies, percentages and charts) and inferential statistics (Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis) as deemed appropriate. The empirical findings and conclusion from this research revealed that: input variables significantly predicts or influences adolescents’ academic performance, however, while the other two measured process variables did not significantly predict or influence adolescents’ academic performance. Some pertinent recommendations were given on school teachers, students, parents, curriculum planners, and the Nigerian Government/Ministry of Education. School Teachers and all other authorities in the school to ensure that the two input variables (availability of teaching aids for Mathematics and nature of school environment) are up-to-date and relevant to arouse knowledge acquisition within the present-day education atmosphere.
